Outlook For Cotton Production In The US 2013 Production Forecast Reduction

< p > the US Department of agriculture lowered its cotton output to 13 million 500 thousand bales in 2013 (less than 14 million packages in May), and the abandoned area is expected to expand because of the continued drought in the southwest.

The latest production forecast is far below the 17 million 300 thousand package in 2012, which will be the lowest output in four years.

< p > the estimated planting area is about 10 million acres. This figure will be updated in the area report released by the US Department of agriculture in June 28th.

The report includes the actual planting area in early June and the estimation of the sown cotton.

As of June 9th, 88% of the expected cotton planting area has been sown, lower than last year (95%) and 5 years average sowing schedule (92%).

Similarly, crop growth is lagging behind. 6% of cotton is buds, compared with 18% last year, and 5 annual average bud rate is 11%.

< p > based on the current forecast, the US cotton harvest area is estimated to be 8 million 100 thousand acres, which means the abandonment rate is 19%.

Last year, the abandonment rate reached 24%.

Historically, most cotton fields abandoned in the southwestern region (Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas).

The third consecutive years of drought in Southwest China are expected to account for the largest proportion of the total abandonment area in the United States this year.

It is estimated that the abandonment rate of the southwest in 2013 is 32%, while the latest forecast is higher than the 10 year average 25% abandonment rate, which is about half of the 2011 abandonment rate.

In 2013, P cotton yield was still estimated at 800 lbs / acre per mu, compared to 887 lb / acre in 2012.

The National Bureau of agricultural statistics will begin the field output survey in August.
