The UCTA said they would not accept the results of the new wage negotiations currently being negotiated by the negotiating committee before settling the minimum wage dispute.

UCTA chairman Ahmed Paruk said yesterday.

Paruk also claims that employers in other industries have taken similar positions.

UCTA and the negotiating committee clashed over the minimum wage issue last year, raising the minimum wage to 336 Rand in April.

The negotiating committee has been cracking down on illegal factories, after which the committee decided to let these enterprises gradually abide by the minimum.

UCTA has 300 factories that fail to comply.

Last month, the Negotiating Committee began to inspect 416 factories that failed to comply. Some factories were shut down during the inspection process, but other factories also started work again.

At least 14500 workers were employed in non-compliance factories, and 86 million Rand from September 2008 to September 2009.

Last year, the negotiating committee agreed that the factory had to pay 336 Rand minimum wage from the beginning of April, pay 465 Rand minimum wage by the end of the year, and pay the 516 Rand minimum wage by April next year.

Baard, executive director of the association, said that his association could not support UCTA's call for avoiding negotiations because it meant that the workers alone decided the wages of the industry.
